PASSED-End School Lunch Debt Collection (H. 3006)

H. 3006 would ban the use of debt collectors to collect debts for school lunch or breakfast accounts and prevent entities from assessing or collecting any interest, fees, or additional charges for outstanding debts.

WREN supports H. 3006 which bans the practice of using debt collection for student lunch debt. Meal shaming is a practice that South Carolina schools should be moving away from and using debt collectors is just another form of school meal shaming. Using debt collection firms often passes additional fees onto the family, greatly increasing the amount of debt an already struggling family or household owes. School districts should not be shifting the burden of collecting fees to a debt collector, especially if those fees or any other charges meet or exceed the amount that is owed for school meals.
