Staff Q&A: Katie Dattilio

Can you tell us about your role and how you became involved with this organization?

I’m the Legislative Affairs Associate at WREN, where I focus on policy development, research, and legislative analysis. The team lovingly refers to me as the “Stat Queen”. :) I got involved with WREN because I’ve always been passionate about equity and justice, and I really connected with our mission to uplift women and gender-expansive people in South Carolina.

What do you think are the biggest issues facing women’s rights today in South Carolina?

Reproductive freedom is under constant threat, and we’re seeing the ripple effects across healthcare, economic opportunity, and personal autonomy. On top of that, the lack of access to affordable childcare, paid family leave, and protections against discrimination all continue to disproportionately impact women, especially women of color and those in rural areas. These are deeply interconnected issues, and they require bold, people-centered policy solutions.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

It’s incredibly rewarding to see weeks (or months!) of collaboration with individuals and organizations across the state come together, whether that’s stopping a harmful bill or shaping policy that reflects people’s lived experiences.

How do you maintain your passion and drive in a field that often deals with difficult or emotional issues?

I stay grounded by leaning on community. I’m lucky to work with passionate, supportive colleagues who are there through the highs and lows. I also try to make space for joy and creativity whenever I can! Those moments of connection help me recharge and keep going.

What advice would you give to young women or those interested in pursuing a career in women’s rights?

Go on “side quests”! There’s no one true path. Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned came from spaces that weren’t directly about advocacy, and all of it helped shape the perspective I bring today. Find mentors, seek out opportunities to learn, and trust that you have something valuable to contribute. There’s room for everyone!
