Legislative Session Weekly Update, January 13-15

Happy first week of Legislative Session! Here’s where things stand on the issues we’re tracking closely.

The Week in Review (January 13-15):

First, some good news! Democratic Senators introduced the South Carolina Family Protection Act. This is a pro-family, pro-work, and pro-taxpayer package that delivers REAL relief to South Carolina families, and WREN is proud to SUPPORT it.

This bill would:

  • Put money back in families’ pockets through targeted tax relief
  • Expand access to affordable childcare and afterschool care
  • Support caregivers, veterans, and working families
  • Improve housing stability and lower prescription drug costs

Help us SUPPORT S. 825.

Reproductive Freedom Under Attack

H. 4760 (Attack on Abortion Medication) and H. 3537 (Death Penalty Bill) were heard in subcommittee.

The subcommittee voted 3-2 to move H. 4760 forward, and it will be heard on Tuesday, January 20 at 1:30PM or 30 minutes after adjournment of the floor, whichever is later. Public testimony will NOT be accepted. We need your continued action to OPPOSE this bill that falsely misclassifies this FDA-approved medication as dangerous.

H. 3537 did NOT receive a vote and would require another subcommittee hearing to move forward.

Anti-Transgender Bathroom Bill

H. 4756, an Anti-Transgender Bathroom Bill was heard in committee, but they ran out of time, and the Chair confirmed anyone who was not able to testify can return on Wednesday (time TBD).

Bills like H. 4756 DO NOT protect women or girls. Instead, they invite suspicion, harassment, and confrontation.

Please contact your legislators and urge them to vote NO on H. 4756.

Voter Restriction Bills

A scheduled hearing on H. 3310 and H. 3643 was postponed. These bills restrict voter participation in elections where South Carolinians often have the most power. WREN strongly OPPOSES this legislation.

This Week (January 20-22)

Thank you for staying engaged, speaking out, and taking action. We’re glad to be in this fight with you.
