Legislative Session Weekly Update, February 18-20
Abortion is under attack at the State House.
The Week in Review (February 18 – February 20)
The House Constitutional Laws subcommittee hearing for House Bill 3457, the total abortion ban, has been officially scheduled for Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 9:00am in the Blatt Building, Room 110. This dangerous bill could strip South Carolinians of their reproductive rights. We must organize in our communities, support organizations that help people get abortion care, share our stories, and demand that our lawmakers protect access to care so that we can make our own decisions about our lives and our futures.
We are mobilizing against this upcoming hearing for House Bill 3457, and we need your help. The most powerful way to fight back is to show up and make your voice heard, whether by testifying, attending, or contacting your legislator.
- Testify: If you or someone you know can testify, please email kdattilio@scwren.org and let us know as soon as possible. Personal stories, medical expertise, and legal perspectives are all incredibly valuable in demonstrating the real harm this ban would cause.
- Attend: Simply being in the room sends a strong message that South Carolinians oppose this ban.
- Call & Email: Use this link to contact subcommittee members and demand they reject this harmful bill.
Every testimony, call, and email help to send a clear message: South Carolinians reject this attack on abortion access.
Meanwhile, the House Ways and Means Committee finalized their version of the state budget, adding an amendment that would block state funding for abortion providers. Even if abortion remains legal, this could force clinics to cut services or shut down, further restricting access to care. When politicians ban abortion, they leave people with fewer options and put lives at risk.
This Week (February 25 – February 27)
The House and Senate will continue business as usual. We will continue to monitor developments, advocate for critical issues, and keep you informed as the session unfolds. Please help us in the fight against House Bill 3457 by taking one of the actions listed above as we work to defend reproductive freedom for South Carolinians.
Together, we can advocate for a more equitable future for women and girls in South Carolina.
