The Rape of Recy Taylor Screening & Community Talk Back

09/26/2018, 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Nickelodeon Theater | Columbia, SC

Join The Hive and The Nickelodeon Theatre for the viewing of The Rape of Recy Taylor, a nationally acclaimed documentary that tells the story of Mrs. Taylor, who was gang raped by six white males at the age of 24 while walking home in rural Alabama. Her story was highlighted by Oprah Winfrey’s Golden Globe Speech, as she chose to not remain silent but to seek justice for the violence brought against her. Mrs. Taylor received support from women such as Rosa Parks and those involved in the anti-violence movement against Black Women during this era.

The documentary will be followed by a community talk-back with expert panelist within the community who will speak on “The Historical Implications of Racial Injustice and Sexual Violence in the Black Community. ”

Sponsored by Columbia College Sisters of Charity P.L.A.C.E. Program and SC WREN, this event is apart of “Critical Conversations,” a Quarterly Community Series on Engaging Topics that Impact the Black Community hosted by The Hive Community Circle.

This event is free and open to the public. Click here to register.
