“Whenever you’re applying for anything, it always helps to understand the process.”
-Chakisse Newton, Richland County Council
TIP: “Your local Clerk to Council will definitely be key. They will be able to let you know what’s available, how to fill out the application, and where you can find the application. The entire process will come from the clerk.” – Dr. Kim Roberts, Fairfield County Clerk to Council
How do local appointments work? What’s the process like? While it may vary slightly depending on your county or municipality, the process is usually somewhat similar between all local governments in S.C.
- Apply – Most applications are either in PDF format or an online form. Our Finding Opportunities and Submitting Your Application lesson will delve deeper into this.
- Application reviewed by the clerk – Usually, the clerk will receive your application. They are the first ones to process it. If you are still waiting to receive a confirmation your application was received, follow up with the clerk in a few business days. You can also check in to see where council is in the appointment process.
- Clerk gathers any needed information – Once you’ve submitted your application, the clerk will review it to ensure they have all the necessary information. They’ll contact you if any clarifications are needed.
- Council reviews applicants – Council members will also review your submission. In some cases, there may be an interview. Interviews usually occur at a committee meeting or full council meeting.
- Council votes on appointments during council meetings – Council must vote on all appointments. Votes are held at council meetings. You will need a majority to be appointed. Once you’re appointed, the clerk will contact you to discuss the next steps.
