“Anytime you’re proactive, that tells somebody that you really want to be appointed and especially if you’re wanting it for the right reasons.”
-Senator Sandy Senn
This lesson will help you identify the people you already know and the people you need to get to know who can help you in the appointment process by advocating for you and making connections for you.
At times South Carolina can feel like a small town where everyone knows each other. That’s a good thing when applying for a board or commission! Building personal relationships will make you stand out in a pool of applicants.
Identify your circle
- Who are the last 10 people you texted? Who picks up your call at all hours?
- Who will be 100% honest with you, even when it hurts?
- Who drove your kids to school when your car broke down?
Your inner circle is an important source of support, but don’t forget to look beyond them. Others you know may be willing to assist you on your leadership journey. Use the Campaign Connections worksheet to help you brainstorm connections.
Connect the dots
Once you have identified your circle, you will need to think about how they can help. People are more likely to respond when you make a direct request.
- Who has existing relationships with decision-makers and can talk you up?
- Who can help make an introduction with the appointing authorities and decision-makers?
- Who can serve as a reference and speak to your qualifications?
- Who is always in the know and can help you identify opportunities?
Then start connecting with them! It may feel uncomfortable asking others for help, but remember – people like helping other people! That’s especially true when those you’re calling upon know your character and commitment.
Grow your community network
How have you been showing up for the community so far? Leave tweeting, retweeting, and posting out of the equation. Officials want to appoint individuals who are truly engaged with the community.
Are you showing up in a meaningful way? What can you do to get actively involved in finding solutions?
- Show up at town or county council meetings
- Volunteer at community events
- Attend a rally or march to support a cause you care about
- Call your representative and ask to sit down and talk about your application
- If the environment is your focus, how can you personally make your life greener?
- Mentor
- Get involved, go to meetings, or volunteer
- Join, Join, Join – are there groups that look awesome but you’ve never thought of joining? Or you’ve never had the time? Join in, make friends, and tell them you’re considering an appointed position.
- Connect, Connect, Connect – Tell people about your application and that you’re looking for help/support/advice.
- Show Up, Show Up, Show Up – Did you recently get an email asking you to attend the neighborhood watch meeting? Consider showing up so the person who asked will build connections for you.
- Host, Host, Host – Gather friends for a book club, dance party, or viewing party. If you only know a couple of people, ask them to each bring two friends. If you don’t have space to host, ask a friend to host at their place or find a bar or restaurant.
- Befriend your friends’ friends – Ask your inner circle if there are people you should know. GET EVERYONE’S CONTACT INFORMATION.
Not many people step up to lead. If you put yourself out there, others will notice and will present other opportunities to you because every government and organization is actively seeking people who can help them. Develop a reputation as a leader by building a network while also being open about the fact that you’re looking for the right leadership position.
Don’t be a jerk! – When people help you with their money, time, and talent, thank them!
