WREN’s Seen and Heard Project to Launch Inaugural Exhibit
by Megan Plassmeyer on Dec 15, 2017

WREN will open Seen and Heard, a free exhibition at Tapp’s Art Center (1644 Main St.), featuring photography and portraiture by a diverse group of women, gender minorities, and girls from across the Midlands region on February 1-22, 2018. This dynamic exhibit is the premier event in a series of eight unique gallery openings across our region featuring 80 pieces from 40 new, local artists. Through Seen and Heard, photography has been used as a means of expressing the opportunities and barriers faced within our community.
Exhibit artists were recruited by organizers: Sowing Seeds into the Midlands, Every Black Girl, PASOS, Homeless No More, Girls Rock Columbia, The Hive Community Circle, WREN, and Indie Grits Lab and range from ages 12 – 50.
In addition, the exhibition art will be supported by captions available in both English and Spanish, video interviews with the artists, and audience members will have the opportunity to respond through a video storytelling booth. Opening night on February 1 will include a free reception with light refreshments beginning at 5:30 p.m., with an artist panel beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Seen and Heard project helps WREN achieve its mission by building a movement that truly reflects the opportunities and barriers that women and families experience on a grassroots level.
Major Donors Support the Seen and Heard Project:
The Seen and Heard project is made possible by support from the Central Carolina Community Foundation and Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina.
“The Community Foundation is honored to fund this inspiring exhibit that features stories about the opportunities and barriers women in our community face. The exhibition will help connect our community by increasing our awareness of others’ situations and inspiring us to respond with respect and compassion,” said Central Carolina Community Foundation President and CEO, JoAnn Turnquist.
