WREN’s 2024 Legislative Priorities

by Kelli R. Parker on Jan 18, 2024

Happy New Year!

January 9 was the start of the 2024 Legislative session and, even though the year has just begun, we’re already working to advocate against the state’s continued attacks on bodily autonomy.

In less than two weeks, a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for people under 18 has quickly moved from the House to the Senate for debate. And, based on what we’ve already heard, it’s clear that the General Assembly will keep us very busy this year. WREN believes — regardless of income, identity, or background — people, not politicians, should be in control of their own bodies, their health, and their family’s future.

WREN’s Policy Team has clear priorities for the 2024 Legislative Session. Our agenda items involve multiple bills in these four areas:

Protecting Reproductive Freedom

Defending Against LGBTQ+ Discrimination

Expanding Paid Parental Leave

Ending the Essential Products Tax

We will also be supporting our coalition partners in their efforts to advance gender equity regarding housing justice and tenants’ rights, free school meals, and supporting childcare.

We urge everyone reading this to join us in these critical fights. Contact your representatives and make your voices heard. Support organizations that champion equality and justice. Engage with your communities, and have conversations with your friends and neighbors that enlighten and empower.

Every single member of the South Carolina Legislature is up for re-election this year. The only way to create lasting change is to VOTE for leaders who prioritize the rights and dignity of every South Carolinian.

Our defiance against these attacks will shape a future where every person is respected, affirmed, and empowered.
