Victory in the Fight to End Period Poverty

WREN applauds the South Carolina Senate for unanimously passing a bill to remove the sales tax on menstrual products such as pads, tampons, and menstrual cups. We hope the Governor will sign the bill into law. By removing the regressive “tampon tax,” South Carolina has taken a major step towards ending period poverty and ensuring menstrual equity for all.

This is a hard-won triumph for the advocates and organizations who have been tirelessly raising awareness about the financial barriers that prevent too many people from accessing these essential hygiene items.

WREN would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the legislators who championed this issue, as well as the tireless advocates and organizations who raised awareness about the harmful impacts of taxing menstrual products. Your efforts have paved the way for greater affordability, accessibility, and dignity for people across our state.

Today, we rejoice in this crucial step forward, but tomorrow we will continue to advocate against period poverty and the stigma surrounding menstruation until everyone can manage their periods with dignity and without financial strain.
